It's also possible that, with the rumours of teams willing to greatly overpay for Marner, the Knight would prefer to sign and trade at a number they can stomach rather than participating in a July auction that may reach 14+ million.
At this point, I think we all know Marner is looking to maximize the dollar amount. |

They will need to move out $10m in cap space to take on a huge Marner contract.
So, a deal with the Leafs makes some sense as long as the Leafs get a good asset in return and Vegas gets the necessary cap relief. |
