Goalies historically don't go for much, unfortunately. I don't think the Flames did bad getting what they did. Markstrom had a full NMC and total control over where he went. Getting a 1st and a serviceable defenseman out of it is not a bad return. |

Such a terrible return. Yes he had a NMC, but he's not chopped liver, he's one of the better goalies in the league even at 34. It's not like the Devils goaltending situation is great. You don't pull the trigger until they are offering more. You make Marky sit and sweat it out. The Devils eventually cave and offer more, even if it's just additional picks, then you take the deal. Terrible asset management by the Flames. |

Yep, it's basically what the Avs paid for Kuemper, a 1st and a 2nd round D prospect (Conor Timmins). There was also a conditional 3rd if the Avs won the Cup and they happily paid it out. There was a million out of 4.5 in salary retention. Most thought the Avs overpaid but it was fairly late on July 1st, the Avs had lost Grubauer to Seattle, they supposedly tried with Andersen but he went to Carolina and they also supposedly tried with Ullsmark but lost to Boston and tried to trade for Gibson but didn't like the cost. Arizona knew they were in a bind and there was supposedly a bidding war with Holland in Edmonton for Kuemper. For this time of year it's a pretty good return for a goalie.
Here's the actual headline in ESPN's report:

Colorado Avalanche pay steep price to acquire goalie Darcy Kuemper from Arizona Coyotes, source says |

Or the Devils go in another direction and you get stuck with a goaltender who doesn't want to be there and nothing in return. The Devils don't "eventually cave" just because you think they will and/or the Flames GM hypothetically wants them to. |

Markstrom has been average over the last two years, has a full NMC, and is 34. The notion he carried a ton of trade value is insane to me. And even if he did, the full NMC might very well eliminate the bidding war. |

Or you know. You make him sit. He doesn't do what he loves to do and that's play hockey. The Devils may not "cave" because I want them to. I don't want them to. But that doesn't change that this is a poor ass trade for Calgary. The Devils goaltending sucks. Even an average Markstrom is a major upgrade. You can't look at that as a Flames fan and go, we did good with the return. It's pathetic. You ask for more. they don't give it, you move on. Markstrom is signed for 2 more years. He either plays hockey for the Flames or doesn't play until a better offer comes around. It would be that simple. The Flames held the cards (lets call it a straight, good, not great), even with Markstrom's NMC and they folded to a high card on the river. |

This is a solid return. A 1st slotted between 11 and 32 (per protections) and a D-man whom slots in as a 5 on a contender but will be a 4 in Calgary. All for a netminder whom had become a bit of a headcase with a ton of bad body language in a situation with a young stud on the way that the organization and the league all know are adding to the pressure to swing a deal. |

Yeah sitting him sends a great message to the rest of the team and any potential future free agents who might have otherwise considered Calgary an option. "Sign here and we'll give you a NMC clause but then attempt to strong-arm you into doing what we want, when we want...otherwise we'll bench you"
That would be about the worst possible way they could operate. I'm sure ownership would be thrilled to discover that they're paying someone $6M this season and next to not play at all.
And you don't "move on" if the Devils don't acquiesce to a price you're demanding that nobody gets for goaltenders...because you can't. Markstrom had all the leverage. |

Of course they got us in the prime time slot under the bright lights even over the host nation. We bring the ruckus...A bounce back game for the ages

They got smoked by Germany. The Swiss are good. Scots maybe get a point in the group and 3 points would be an enormous victory and probably a miracle. The Scots are a nice story, though, and great supporters. Just drink beer and enjoy the environment. Won't happen again for a while. |

Winner of this trade is NJD but Calgary should focus on total rebuild. This retool garbage makes no sense
Bahl is huge, saw him in OHL in Ottawa. Not horrible return either, and more clears cap space |

Calgary is taking a bit of a gamble on the protected 1st. |

Yeah, you would think they would have pushed hard for the #10 in 2024 or made a better deal at the TDL. This makes the rebuild a lengthier process.

Shocker.
Amazing how having absolutely zero leverage affects the return for a player. But all the qualified internet folks out there think being a GM is as easy as just threatening a player with being benched. |
