I guess we will never know unless Nylander gets to play with McDavid right? And just because you were double wrong does not make you right. You had no (frank)ing clue Hyman was capable of 50 goals or Nylander was a 100 pts player |

Thankfully management didn’t listen. The same people trashed us for not taking Ehlers instead of Nylander. |

Can you imagine Nylander with McDavid? Damn. Matthews wouldn’t be winning the rocket if that were the case |

Lol you said this in the old blog too. You also claimed "the team game" starts after the leafs lose. I'm sure you also said the leafs would regret letting top 4 shut down Cody Ceci go too.
So what about the oilers run is "team game" its been McJesus/Drysaddle or bust the entire time. |

Stylistically I don't think Nylander would fare that much better with McDavid; this is not intended as a knock on either player. What makes Zach Hyman so good with McDavid is his willingness to not only go to the net, but also remain there. Not a lot of guys like to hang out on the lip of the crease and take the punishment there. Nylander does what McDavid does, just not as well - he is a great skater who accelerates through the neutral zone making him effective at both zone exits and zone entries. Where they really, really differ is that McDavid slices through the middle and knows he can beat guys 1-on-2 whereas Nylander tends to curl and look for a lane or path of least resistance. He will go the net, but most of the time that path for Nylander is a lane that he picks without opposition.
A guy like Hyman is a screen and a distraction and a threat - especially with McDavid cutting to the net with the puck. You have to respect McDavid's 64 goals last year, so it's not like he can't beat you with a shot - and that gives a guy like Hyman a LOT of opportunities. I don't think it's a surprise, for instance, that a player like Andreychuck crossed 50 goals the two years he played with Gilmour doing much the same thing.
You almost think that if Marner wasn't spending all his time trying to feed Matthews, he could have probably made Hyman a "real" 35-40 goal guy here just by putting the puck on net.

RNH, Bouchard and Hyman are also doing well.
And the Oilers PK is outscoring Florida.
So really, it's not just the McJesus & Draisidle show. |

I wanted them to try and split the Hyman role into two guys (Haula and Bonino were examples) who could collectively score 30 and make up for the offensive output but also distribute more puck battling over multiple lines. I figured that those two would come in cheaper than Hyman and could provide a similar role.
I think, in hindsight, it was selling Hyman pretty short. I still like Haula, but Bonino really only had 1 decent year left in him. I didn't want to go over $5m on Hyman and felt that $4m was fair, so . . . that's probably why I do the job I do and nothing in hockey management!

Except McD and Dry stir the drink. Couldn't win a game without them being "on" early in the series. If you were right then McD doesn't need to go beast mode every game to win.
Game 1 - McD was 0 points and -2 - rest of the cast 0s
Game 2 - McD 1 assist - rest of the cast 1 assist
Game 3 - McD 2 assists - the rest of the cast you mention 0s
Like if what you say is true then the 3 guys should be outperforming McDavid but they aren't. |

It was split 50/50 I think in here on that. A few, probably some of the people who hate Dubas, thought they should just pay the 5 million "for a legit starter"

It's not an overly fair comparison. You have the best player in the world playing like the best player in the world. I'm not sure how the other guys could possibly be expected to compare!
Bouchard and Hyman each have 3 GWG in the playoffs; putting it in perspective Bouchard has 32 points in 24 games - and only 9 of those don't feature Connor McDavid. Hyman has 22 points and 7 don't feature McDavid; RNH has 22 points and 11 don't feature McDavid. Draisaitl has 31 points and 15 of those don't feature McDavid.
If McDavid weren't playing like this would the Oilers have made it this far? I very much doubt it - but that doesn't mean that several other players on that team aren't contributing in very important ways that are just overshadowed.

To add to Aaron’s post:
At the end of the day of Oilers win ultimately that’s all that matters right. But I do feel they are a meh team leaning on a PP (and this playoff PK) and the 2 mega stars. They go as those go.
Game 1-3
- Oilers had zero PP goals
- Panthers played their game
- Bob played great
- McDavid and Drais were getting chirped in media (TSN/Sportsnet) cause they were no shows and not impactful.
- Florida won all 3 games
Game 4
- Bob literally had one of his worst games of his career (.688 Sv%!!)
- Panthers played awful. Weren’t engaged looked asleep through 40mins
- Oilers scored a PP goal
- McDavid loads up 4pts
- Drais 2pts
- Oilers win
Game 5
- McDavid 4pts
- PP gets 2 goals
- Florida out scores Oilers 5v5 loses game
- Oilers win
Game 6
- Flat out great game by Oilers (entire roster)
(prior to Game 6) the Oilers only had 3 PP goals (they came in games 4/5) - In games the oilers had zero PP goals and 97/29 were a non factor? They lost ALL 3 games. Then 97 took over and they got their first 3 PP goals of series. What do you suppose happened? They won.
Oilers rely heavily on Mega Stars and PP to win a lot of games. McDavid said it. Knoblauch said it.
While I absolutely acknowledge successful teams (in Cup run) need special teams to be good - Oilers rely on it and 97/29 almost exclusively. |

You haven't been watching. McDavid got zero points last night. Drai 1 assist iirc. They're a team. It's the same stuff all the time. Discount every other team except your own which you make endless excuses for - the one that doesn't win poop. |

Guess he is right. McD went least mode in game 6 - jribout The odds are that he'll be better in game 7. I think the long distance travel is effecting the Panthers more than the Oilers. Edmonton is used to long distance plane rides, playing in the West. The Panthers get to play their games in the East and travel is very light compared to Western Conference teams. Add the fact that Florida played the finals the year before and having a short summer, may be running on fumes. It's still a pickem'. The first goal may actually decide this series.

You really think a 5.5 hour flight is going to be the death knell for a group of athletes who fly 41 times a year minimum?
Because Edmonton probably flies a 2-2.5 hour flight time average to Florida's 1.5 to 2 hours?
We're into full on silly season now aren't we. |

Special teams are key to winning in the playoffs
Oilers outplayed the panthers in game 1. Bob was the only reason they won. |

Both teams will have a full days rest. Doubt the travel is impacting one team more than the other.
If anything, the oilers are probably on fumes having to have had to win 3 elimination games in a row.
But i agree, Florida still is the bet to win and first goal probably decides the victor.
But we'll see |
