From last blog for aaron.

Edmonton has:
A true top D pair
A quaity 3rd dman (way overpaid)
Their stars have heart and have helped to drag this team to victory when it counts - sure theyve been shut down at times.....thsts gonna happen
A 3rd line that has really come alive.
A goalie who got hot and stayed healthy.
Great special teams.

All the things the leafs have never had....outside of one round where matthews, marner, rielly and ror were awesome and willie and Jt were good.

Now with that said, i still feel like Florida wins game 7.

Agree with most, Nurse is not a quality d-man by any stretch. I also see the Oilers winning and that douchebag Bill Zito throwing a few beer bottles after losing in embarassing fashion. Look for Bennett and Tkachuck to start trying to goon it up when they start losing. The hand shake line will be interesting.

As hard as it is to imagine I think we understate just how ridiculously underskilled our D core was last year. I agree ...imagine the Oil with Bouchard and 5 guys named Ceci or Kulak. McCabe is trending but he's still 4th on the Oil. Factor in a historically good special teams (Oil) vs. historically bad special teams (Leafs) and boom ..big difference.

I was looking at Capfriendly for UFA Dmen. I sorted by minutes played and there are 7 guys that played 20+ mins per night. Montour, Skjei, Pesce, Roy, Demelo ...all make sense. Teams are going to be throwing money at them b/c they were all good.

The other two guys? Brodie and Klingberg !? Says it all for me ...Leafs were dependant on two injured/declining/poopty dmen to play big minutes.

Time to prioritize the blue line more.

Agreed, the blueline needs to be a major priority, the forwards arent getting it done with a meh backend.
Pesce and roy for me. Z will cost more than hes worth imo.

I wonder how people here would do if the leafs have the same core forwards and sucked as hard as the oilers did in 2018 to get a top 10 pick.

I mean the people here can't stop trying to trade everyone when the leafs are much better than that. It would be an apocalypse. I mean if you want to say the leafs only had 1 good year...the oilers had 79 (frank)ing points in the same time frame and the leafs made the playoffs every year. You can't discount that if you want to compare year over year.

Anyway, I don't know what you're referencing here because I don't live here. Oilers certainly have much better special teams than the leafs did this year the rest is arguable. At any rate...it's been all year McD show or bust.

is
Seems like a lot of whining.
Its ok the oilers are doing well.
Who cares if you make the playoffs every year but dont get out of the 1st round.
Ive said several times I would have liked a reset year to get a higher draft pick, replenish some stock.
But im glad the leafs kept their 1st this year as they dont have one next year.

BIG HARD D and 1B goalie should be priorities #1 and #2.

Look at this season as the last one with major cap uncertainty before the money picture becomes much clearer and more favorable. If you have to run it back with minor deck chair shuffling, then you vomit in your mouth a little bit, swallow it down, and do it.

The following season you will have one or both of Marner and/Tavares off the books for $11m minimum in cap space gained, plus whatever the cap goes up on it's own. The money situation will look a lot better to address the needs on D and goalie. You'll also have another year of Woll and a much better feel of what kind of goalie he is gonna be going forward.

You keep Marner unless his salary demands are absolutely stupid. Trust in Berube to get these guys motivated and playing with a higher compete. Build a proper line around Marner that has enough snot to go around.

If Marner wants $13m, then he can go to Utah and be THE MAN.

Tavares will stay on a $2m deal or retire and get hired as team staff with an eye towards being an assistant coach or something.

Make it so.

I dont see jt taking $2m, probably $4.5m minimum.

I say the priority should be two quality D, goalie and then fillers.

It's going to be interesting to see what the next contracts will look like for Tavares and Stamkos.

We'll know pretty soon on Stamkos.

I'm sure Tavares, his agent, and possibly some GM's will value Tavares higher than his actual worth going forward. He's not aging like a fine bourbon. His production will likely decline and you could probably replace his offense with a good bit less money than he will be seeking. I think you are right though - he's not gonna lowball himself and take less than $5-ish per.

I see Stamkos taking a discount to keep the band together, but I don't see him taking less than $8m. He's still producing and 40 goals is nothing to sneeze at. Other teams would gladly scoop him up at more than Tampa can reasonably pay.

Of the two, I think Stamkos has the higher chance of staying. I think Tavares will either leave or end up working in the front office.

I could be wrong on either or both counts though.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports that Ullmark has Ottawa on his no-trade list, but he’s also open to waiving that no-trade to join the Senators and sign long-term. Pagnotta says talks between the two teams have progressed. Meanwhile, Ullmark also has Toronto on his no-trade and will not waive to join the Maple Leafs.

Does anybody know why Ullmark is not open to a trade to the Leafs?

I think Tampa does not have the cap space to sign Stamkos.

I am not a fan of trading Marner. But, if the Leafs do trade Marner, they could sign Stamkos at $10m on a 2 year deal.

Edmontons goalie is crap. The team is doing everything they can to keep Florida to the both side and not get shots. Florida had 2 shots on net in the 1st period last game. As long as skinner is in net the game is never over.

Why trade Marner then sign someone for 0.9m less in cap?
So they are simply trading marner for picks and young prospects?

Agree, that JT will not likely retire anytime soon. I can see him giving up the C this season and passing the baton to Matthews. I also think he will sign a very team friendly deal to stay with the Leafs as a third liner moving forward.

Ya, not excited about the costs (6+?) but I agree Pesce and Roy ..maybe Montour would be top of my list. Tanev, if it's 1 or 2 years. Demelo might be good too if he's a little cheaper. Zadorov is a 17 min per night guy who's going to get PAID.
