Ovi still has a whole season left. I can't see him scoring 40 next year, but you never know with him.
There isn't anyone playing today that will come close to getting Gretzky's number, let alone what Ovi will finish with. Matthews may get top 10 in goals, but he won't play enough games to get to where Ovi is.
Ovechkin is just built differently.

And who knows how many goals he'd have if he didn't have two shortened seasons and a lockout.

So I have a question. Obviously every puck that OV puts in the net now will be collected as every goal will be a new record, but what about the stick he scored it with, what about the jersey he wore, his gloves his skates because I am sure the HHOF will want everything that he used to score his last and record goal and who knows which goal he scores will be his last until he retires.
As for who breaks OV's record, no one.

That’s #74 (McMann) in your pic. Not AM (#34). And you call yourself a Leaf’s fan!!

Both Draisaitl and Matthews should be locks for 800 goals barring something completely unforeseen. Injuries and work stoppages will be the variables at play.

If Matthews hits 750 career goals by the time he is 35 (next 8 seasons after this one) it’s not impossible to pass 894 (we don’t know yet where Ovi will stop). Both players have enough talent themselves and play alongside enough talent that they will still produce at a reasonable clip of 20-25 goals per season from age 35-40. Btw he could hold the nhl record for most nhl goals by an American by age 35

Problem is Matthews averages 70 games a season….ues he avgs 45 goals a season but at that GP he would need 2 extra seasons to play the same amount of games. I’m not a betting man but I don’t see him playing 21 seasons, let alone maintaining that pace throughout.

Let’s circle back in 5 years and see where they are.

Regardless. ATM hes the only one who would sniff it for the moment.

Ovechkin only needs 12 more seasons of 100pts to catch Gretzky's points...never going to happen.
Also, there is WAY too much emphasis on goal scoring in this new entitled generation. Yes, Ovi is/was a magnificent goal scorer, but only 40 of his goals were unassisted. 40

You simply cannot win this game alone, that's why it's the best sport.

As for the one to break it? Only Matthews of the current active players, but if not him someone new will come along...

So only having 40 unassisted goals is a knock on Ovechkin, but hockey is the best sport because you can't win alone?

Really no one...of course there is hype now. it will die down and when really clicks in except TSN will blow Mathews horn and of course RDS will claim Caufield will score 100 next year and reach 1000 goals but like I said no one is Ovy and the other two are too soft

I think what op might be trying to say is that hockey is a team sport innately, where enabling another player's success is very important, and points measure that more than goals, and so the present Ovi hoopla is misleading, because it leaves out the critical enabling/team part.

To highlight that point, op points out that ovi got help in 96% of his goals, and yet that 96% help is not reflected in the goal total alone.

Points are thus a more accurate reflection of a player's worth, and there, op points out how far ahead the MAGA supporting guy is compared to the Russian-fascism supporting guy.

I am not supporting or disclaiming op. I just think that's what op meant.

He might even end up with more professional goals than Gretzky (46 goals in WHA prior to the Oilers joining the NHL).
