I'm assuming Woll gets the start tonight.
- Atomic Wedgie

I don't know who actually goes - but Stolarz hasn't been very good against his former team and Woll hasn't started yet against them. Both Woll and Stolarz have been excellent against Tampa. Last year Woll was pretty good against Florida.

If I'm the coaching staff I want to see how my goalies are faring against my potential 1st round competition.

On a related note, I saw on Twitter that after Ovi broke the record people were blabbing about how great Mike Bossy was and how he was really the all-time best goal scorer.

Here's the thing - Bossy's career ended at age 30. He didn't play into the waning years when scoring became harder and more difficult. The fact that Ovechkin has scored 47 goals / 82 games from ages 31-39 is pretty f'n incredible and I don't think Bossy would have been able to maintain that sort of a pace.

But even still, looking at Goals/82 game season up to the age of 30 (not a comprehensive list - just names I thought of as some of the best goal scorers and looked up):

Lemieux: 69
Gretzky: 63
Bossy: 62
Brett Hull: 62
Bure: 52
Kurri: 52
Ovechkin: 51
Rocket Richard: 51
Selanne: 49
Lafleur: 47
Dionne: 47
Esposito: 47
Bobby Hull: 47
Neely: 45
Howe: 41

I've said this before and I'll say it again: I've never seen anyone score goals like prime Mario.

It doesnt matter how any goals a player has, i have no problem with someone not liking a particular player.
But a player with the 2nd most goals AND whos on your team? Weird.
However, people hate marner and he usually leads the team in points year over year so...what can you do?

I believe we were discussing this a couple of weeks ago.

Chris Johnson in the Athletic gives the definitive answer:

With all of the college player signings happening, do they have to be on a team’s playoff roster at the deadline to play this season? — Julie K.

In order to be eligible to appear in the playoffs, a player must be on a team’s reserve list at the trade deadline immediately preceding it.

The reserve list includes everyone under contract to an organization, plus the recent draft picks and other players they hold rights to. For example, 2023 first-round pick Ryan Leonard was on the Washington Capitals reserve list at the March 7 trade deadline even though he didn’t officially sign an entry-level contract on March 31 after his NCAA season at Boston College was over. Leonard is eligible to appear in the upcoming playoffs as a result.

Never scored 51 goals.

Did score 50 in 50 games.

But that record should come with the largest asterisk ever typed out in a record book.

I don't really understand why people feel the need to pick one or two of the Core4, and hate on one of them.

Like, can't I just like all of them?

Because of the lower calibre in the league due to the war?

Lower caliber, and also smaller rosters.

There were games where only a dozen guys were dressing.

Clearly not. If you're really gonna be like that, then you have to pick Rielly AND Tavares.

If you do envelope math:

Only 20 guys played for the Habs that year.

1 goalie - every game.

So 19 guys, 647 games in total.

That works out to 12.94 skaters per game.

I don't accept smaller rosters based on the sole notion that when he scored 50 in 50, Herb Cain had 32. Prior to Richard doing this the 40 goal mark had been broken once in the NHL's history (discounting the inaugural season - goalies couldn't and didn't leave their feet for the first month of the season and no one knew how to play the bloody game!).

People love to crap on Gretzky's records because goalies were so small and had no equipment. Then how come everyone wasn't scoring 90? When Gretzky had 92, the next closest had 64 or something like that.

There's a peer comparison that tells you how well a player did against similar competition year-over-year, and Richard's 50 in 50 was still pretty impressive.

But here's another fun fact, which I add because some haterz will say that Richard should have been fighting in the war, instead of playing hockey:

He tried.

The army rejected him - because his wrists weren't strong enough.

Saw a post on the main blog the other day and started to research the whole Ovi vs Gretzky and went down the rabbit hole but decided not to bother posting.

These were the things that stood out (I don't have the exact #'s handy)

Ovi has far more OT goals and games that went to OT than Gretzky
Gretzky never played 4 on 4 or 3 on 3 OT in the NHL. Ever!

Despite people saying Ovi would have had way more goals if he didn't miss games due to the lock out over 20 season Gretzky only played ONE more game than OVI.

ONE!

Layer in the cluth and grab era vs non clutch and grab but also the way goaltending has changed and I think those wash each other out.

Regardless both were incredible but you have good points about Mario and Bossy.

I'd like to say Matthews will beat the record but his injuries are a real reason to doubt he ever will.
