McDavid loves him? Why because of a 4 team tournament where the Canadians had a stacked roster and won the tourney?

I really liked Tocchet, was somewhat pissed when he left, good luck to Tocchet and the Flyers.

I’m sure there are probably several scenarios where McDavid and Tocchet have interacted. You think Conner is holed up living in a cave with only contact with Oilers.

This really sounds made up. You think McDavid is out meeting with random coaches all the time? Really never heard him saying anything about Tocchet to begin with.

He also has nice things to say about everyone, but turning it into he loves Tocchet is just straight up BS.

Did he enjoy his time in 4 nations with the coaches and players sure, but that's about where it ends

Nice things to say about everyone? The dude looks miserable!! Has he ever smiled in his life? Oh, and he only ever seems to open his mouth to whine about something. I know the league would like to market their star players, but good luck marketing this guy.

I really can’t see them ever let McDavid go. They know if he does, the franchise will go back another decade at the very least. Maybe two. When Gretz was traded they went from legendary franchise to afterthought.

There’s too much money on the line not to offer him everything he wants. He alone has had to have raised the value of the Oilers by several hundred million dollars at this point.

Plus, I can’t see him having Hollywood aspirations. Wayne had a little pull outside of the game, but McDavid doesn’t. Outside of Canada and American NHL fans, he isn’t synonymous with the game like 99 was. He’s not the answer to every Trivial Pursuit question regarding hockey like Gretzky was. Hell. He still is.

McDavid belongs in a Canadian city, specifically Edmonton, even if it breaks them.

Its up to McDavid. He doesn't have to sign there. EDM can offer him max money allowed and if he really wants to go elsewhere he can decline. EDM can just do thor best to keep him. Money likely isnt an issue for McDavid. Everyone out there would be willing to pay him whatever he wants as well.

All it comes down to is, does McDavid want to stay. He probably wants to stay though

agree w all of this and adding that Edm can give him an extra yr. If they lose this year though, I think it's possible he wants out.

How did this turn into a negative, and a discussion about McDavid ?
There is always an amount of b.s. with stuff like this. But the main point is understood. Shaw or other canididates are arguably a better coach than Tocchet, but undeniably his popularity will be able to attract free agent signings. Do we want better coaching of the same talent, or...better talent overall on the roster and maybe not the best coaching. We've learned with Torts that he probably got the most out of this roster to play over their heads to a degree (barring players reaction to his demeanor). We're not going to get more from this group - people have been blogging here for months that we simply just have to add better talent overall or we are going nowhere. And this is where this decision leads us.

It’s clear to anyone who watches the team closely that we simply don’t have enough high end talent. Tocc to me is head and shoulders a better coach for this group moving forward and if it does come to pass that ufa are more amenable to coming here because he’s here, then that’s certainly big because I worry about our ability to draft top talent even with high picks. I also believe that torts has a rep and that a lot of players would not have come here due to this.

To me, it’s good news to see toccc here. I hope he selects some good assistants and specifically someone to coach a pp. That aspect has driven me insane the last few years. Now let’s pray that even though we lost the draft, we get some decent talent with the picks we have.

Not that I don't want to have highend talent, I do, but you don't need two 100+ point players to be successful in this league. Look at Carolina, they had one guy who had more than 70 points, Aho had 74, and they're in the final four. Dallas had two 80+ point players (81 & 82) and Florida has one (81).

It's more about how you play, the structure you play with, being on the right side of the puck, being hard on pucks, playing with speed, and having very good goaltending. If they Flyers can get an 80 point center and much better goaltending, they're closer than people think to pushing for a playoff spot.

I’m not even talking about getting 100 pt talent but better talent up and down the lineup to execute whatever the system might be. We don’t have skill to score or execute on the pp, nor the speed etc to punch back or forecheck. I actually think that with a better team in front, Ersson has a lot of potential. We see that from his performances with Sweden. Fedotov and kolosov haven’t shown me enough yet to make me think they can be nhl tenders so we might need to upgrade backup.

Similarly, we have a couple decent d men but no elite top pair. For the most part we’re muckers and grinders who defend by using a Phalanx and blocking a million shots and never possessing the puck. Not a winning strategy. More talent would change that.

Has Tocchet indicated who his bench coaches will be or is that still being held close to the vest?

They are holding it close to the vest for now, but Luke Richardson's name has been rumoured for defense coach.
