Lou quotes from the NY Post article: Islanders’ cap issues may make Jean-Gabriel Pageau expendable:

“You can always make transactions to create space. So whatever we can do, if we can, to make ourselves better, we’re certainly gonna do that. As far as cap space, we have to create it.”

“If I didn’t think and believe in the group, you wouldn’t make a coaching change,” Lamoriello said last week. “I believe in the group. I feel that. But we have to play to our capabilities, like any other team.”

They're going to have to retain some sort of salary if they're going to cap-dump Pageau. On pace for 31pts and a $5M cap hit isn't going to be a big draw for a lot of teams.

Now Lou is worried about Cap space?

Sure he just realized that the cap is preventing him from doing anything. He reminds me of another old guy in charge of something. I wonder who that would be???

I agree with you. I only bolded the statement about JGP as that was the title of the NY Post article. I thought the quotes from that article were interesting. They go in line with how Lou has always operated, and as it appears, will continue to operate.

Barzal can consistently be an impact player like he was last night. I will be the first one to admit I made a mistake saying that he should be traded as he cannot carry a team. But, you also need to admit that what he is being paid he should be doing this on a consistent basis every night or he is another overpaid good player.

His salary is fair for both the club and player now and when it was signed and will look like a bargain in a couple years when the cap and salaries increase.

he's also improving greatly, right when he started talking about datsyuk, he started playing more like him in the neutral zone and backchecking really well clogging the zone being in exactly the right spot. kid plays like my likeness in the video game and I love it. just need to get superstars Donald Trump and Osama Bin Laden on his line so the islanders can win the cup every year 🤣

At this point they should be trying him on the PK. It can't possibly be any worse and if he can strip the odd puck here or there he'd be off to the races. At the very least teams will have to be cautious of the threat of that happening.

Like the fact that he is mixing up the lines. "Cissicas" is no longer the fourth liner but the legit 3rd line center along with JGP. I think Martin is there for inspiration. No way they can make a po spot if they keep the aged fourth line intact.

agreed, he could end up being a lethal shorthanded threat if he keeps doing what he's doing

Yeah I would like to see some more speedy/mobile PK'ers that can be a little more active and pressure the other team a lot more

Cizikas can move. Clutterbuck is fine too. Martin doesn't kill penalties and, I love the guy, but they should just fire him into the sun in general.

But to do something like Pageau-Clutterbuck/Holmstrom and Cizikas/Barzal would be something I'd be happy seeing. Barzal can probably go out for the last 30-45 seconds so he's fresh once things get evened up.

I'm just saying fire them into the sun in general but barzal would be a good idea on the pk. A lot of teams are now doing that type of thing and we have seen horvat out there too. Also if they get tarasenko I wouldn't be happy unlike 2 years ago. I'd take chychrun if possible

I suppose Maclean coming up and playing well at 4c allows Casey to take pageaus spot and move him out. Wouldn't mind it for the right player but the cap space makes it an issue

Not sure they can risk Barzal blocking a shot on the PK and getting injured.

That's a fair point. But a risk I'm willing to take right now because the PK is an abortion

I just don't think they should be trading for anyone right now. I don't think either of those guys are going to make them much better once you take into account the fact that they have to trade Pageau or Palmieri off the roster. I think Lou would be making a mostly-lateral move and using draft capital that we can't afford to lose to do that

It would also mean increased minutes for Barzal. The Leafs have more offensive support than the Islanders and can spread the minutes out better than the Islanders could.

Islander should be looking to subtract not add. Keep all the picks they can and try to get more.

Agreed the pk has been disappointing. It had been their strength under Trotz.
I think we’re gonna see Lou make a move, so maybe he addresses the pk?
