Good read, thanks. Your title should read this though - "Sharks building for future success because of a terrible year". Losing is winning when it comes to rebuilding through the draft. Pretty much the only way to secure elite young talent is through losing and utilizing the draft.

Occasionally a GM will make a mistake and trade elite young talent, like Boston did with Joe Thronton and to a lesser extent Tyler Seguin, idiots, but those instances are rare. Mike Grier is on the right path to find success for the San Jose Sharks.

It will be a big mistake to let Barabanv walk...he has demonstrated that when he is healthy and has decent players to play with that he can be a very skilled Top 6 forward who is a deft playmaker who also has the courage to go to the dirty areas...
LeBanc on the other hand hasn't shown that he is willing to play D, has repeatedly taken lazy penalties and will be better served elsewhere

I think Grier has been good in terms of establishing a direction - I don't necessarily always think he's gotten great value in the trades he's made, but the thought behind the deals themselves have been sound.
