Hey the Bolts have a blog!
Sure stinks of desperation to invest that much in a bottom six player!!! |

Seems like an astronomical amount to pay for a 3rd line wing. |

An embarrasment of riches.
No team has navigated the salary cap and maintained a top 5 team for as long as Tampa.
Jeannot will thrive in Tampa. Essentially he replaces Ondrej Palat, but with more snarl.
Tampa needs a little more speed for the 4th line, but otherwise is in great shape.
Toronto, Tampa and Boston, arguable 3 of the top 5 or 6 teams in hockey. Change the format Bettman.

The price for Hagel was crazy too, but look at what he's done this year. Tampa must have some extra special tea leaves they are reading here because this is two seasons of unloading ridiculous draft packages for what appear to be middling players. The fact they got Nick Paul for so cheap when they're shelling this out for Hagel/Jeannot speaks to how poorly Ottawa makes deals. And Jeannot isn't even under contract - one has to imagine at this price they've got something long term and cost controlled lined up. |

Tampa really should have a regular blog around here. Its crazy they dont. They have been an upper echelon team for a looooong time. I mean, since 2015, the past 8 years, they've been to the finals 4 times with two cups and have been in the final 4 two other times. Thats crazy successful. |

With more snarl...and about half the offensive production Palat was providing at that age. |

You were about to, but then the blogger was included in the package for Jeannot. |

Fair point, however, Jeannot did not cut his teeth with Kucherov and Tyler Johnson, like Palat did from AHL on up..
He might get a shot on all 3 top lines. But I suspect, he will start on 3rd line with Paul and Ross Colton.
Tampa might be better ultimately with Jeannot playing road grader on line with Stamkos and Cirelli. Allowing Killorn to play third line with Paul and Colton.
Either way, their top 9 is as good as any. |

I do believe the goal is winning cups and playing meaningful playoff games. I am glad to trade picks for players to help me win now.
The lightning are selling lottery tickets. Poile traded for lottery tickets...
Let that marinate....
On a serious note, what we see happening in the NHL now is teams no longer are worried about the long trajectory of rebuilds etc. Vegas and now Seattle (even the recent success of Rangers) are showing the value of culture and a fresh mindset.
Chicago is doing it, purge the cupboards and start anew. |

This trade and the Hagel trade, seems they are trying to lock up cost controlled assets with a huge potential upside in an attempt to extend the window. They are going to have a huge cap crunch this summer, and a cursory look at the roster suggests Stamkos would be the contract that gets moved. Picking at the end of each round is a tough way to keep the pipeline stocked. It's an interesting strategy. |

Great analysis. Like the hawks did for a few years, the success of team makes them attractive to Euro/college free agents and typically, they do not have huge holes to fill.
Look at Nick Perbix... |

I agree with ya in theoryโฆgoal is to win cups. Dare I say, I think what most here are opining is that too much was paid. Jeannot may have cost a 1st rounder and a prospect last years TDL. Value/price paid should have been lower this year given his production and contract status. |

Big price ..... UNLESS.....they win the Cup.
Then, it is just another shrewd, deadline deal done by the Lightning.
They ARE the best at the deadline deal, so I will not criticise until it blows up on them.
But, if they win the Cup....no matter what those picks turn out to be....a win for Tampa.
