If the scouting department can’t make good picks then all of this is hopeless. No matter what they do; trade up, trade down, or stand pat, they’re screwed. There are rarely ever no-brainers beyond the top 1-3 or so picks depending on the draft.
Cale Makar was not a guaranteed #1D. If he was he’d have gone 1st overall. There were questions about his size and the level of competition he was playing against. Meanwhile Nolan Patrick was a no-brainer that year at 2. 23 teams passed on Pastranak, VAN passed on him twice. The vaunted Dallas stars scouting staff passed on him.
The Flyers staying at 12 means they may pick between Eiserman, Iginla, or Sennecke. None of those players are sure things. Many draft evaluations say that as many as 5 defenseman in this coming draft have 1D potential. None of them are guarantees, just like Makar wasn’t a guarantee.
If you want to believe the reports that came out years after, the Flyers scouts actually preferred Heiskanen and Makar to Patrick and it was Hextall who chose him instead. That would indicate they’re better than we might think.
If they can move up while keeping 12, cool, maybe Catton or Helenius falls to them at 12 while getting a D with the higher pick. But if moving 12 is the only way to move up, you have to do it. - Schmojo
Agree with needing to hit on the picks but honestly, the acumen of the scouts vs Hextall on that pick are way over blown due to Clarke roasting Hextall to defend the son of his idol and surrogate son, Fletch. None of those choices were off the wall as they were all rated to go in that area but it did hurt the Flyers getting that pick wrong and Hextall took the blame, as he should, being the GM and it being his decision but Clarke poured gasoline on it.
The Flyers scouts need to be graded on their overall body of work and we need to know who they preferred vs who the Flyers picked for every pick every year, if you really want to grade them. It's unknowable exactly how good or bad the scouts are in a vacuum and rarely do draft room disputes come to light except in situations where a snubbed senior advisor decides to air grievances.
Were the scouts on board with the Risto trade, TDA, ND, etc? If they were, then they should all be fired. If it was just Fletch and Torts being Fletch and Torts, that's another story. We know Fletch was a huge fan of Risto long before the trade. |

- they had a good year? how so? 6th place in a 8 team division.
- the 2 leading scorers are not ahl prospects.
- what young players seem like they are developing? Zayde wisdom? Desnoyers? They wont make room for Ginning or Attard, those 2? - hello it's me 2050
This new era of orange branding is just keeps going doesn't it? The AHL team was garbage and only made the playoffs because everyone but the very bottom get in.
Let's keep the coach and give him a 2 year extension! Already done? Great, the mission to keep every exFlyer employed continues. How are brand ambassador's John LeClair and Sharp doing these days? Taking time from their busy schedules to give tips on the record book breaking power play?
The alumni who get a paycheck from the Flyers should form their own union.

Here comes Chychrun. - Tomahawk
That was my first thought too. My only hope is that phrase “may happen closer to the draft” means it’s for picks and not Chychrun. But alas I have a bad feeling about this. |

There are amateur scouts and pro scouts. The amateur scouts deal with prospects to draft. The pro scouts deal with players already at the pro level. The amateur scouts have nothing to do with either of the 3 players you mentioned. |

Well that is why the Flyers are where they are and have been for a long time, isn't it? This is going to be said a lot, I care about end results and not the crazy rationale behind the story. When did the Flyers last draft a player who would be considered a super star or a franchise player (AND performed that way not just labeled)? When you say Giroux, now name that player after him? End results.
No brainers...picks 1-3....yup they better start figuring a way to get one of those soon. If it's all about luck then they are (frank)ed for a while.
As for the next part, we ALL know the same stories you do. We ALL hear the same rumors. Regurgitating them to rationalize a point does nothing. Patrick had injury concerns PRIOR to the draft, not a secret and not retrospect, and the end result? The same exact thing for the Ellis trade, known injury concerns. It was probably the most discussed thing said after the trade...end result? Picking O'Brien, Picking Rubstov, even picking Frost? Sure, later 1sts, but end result? Again people can jump on the luck train all they want, but the fact is WHAT IS THE END RESULT? Bad decisions. They have been sucking for years, what have they got out of it?
Once again I am ok with moving up, but the team better damn well pick someone they are confident about, none of this bad luck BS. It's all about END RESULT. Anyone can throw poop against a wall and hope it sticks, but the Flyers seem to be paying a lot for people and they still have a clean wall.
The problem is all these suggestions I'm seeing sound like they come straight from the Flyers playbook, but then I see people complain about the same poop later. WTF? |

My guess the trade is likely something around:
Flyers get: Chychrun, Pinto, ‘24 2nd, ‘24 4th
Sens get: Farabee, Frost, FLA pick, ‘24 3rd
There may be other pieces involved but my gut says the trade centers around this group and not the 7th or 12th overall picks. |

We might find out pretty soon. I think Chychrun….might be the guy….but I’m hoping, like others, that it does involve # 7. Word is the pick is up for trade….I hope it’s the case. |

So basically tk for Ottawa’s first?
The trades are definitely starting to drop. If the scf goes 7 then the oilers or panthers will need to be making trades while at the parade. |

I don’t mind that. Farabee and frost are on the outs. It’ll be fun to watch them achieve success elsewhere. |

I would be shocked if Laughton was not in a deal with OTT. Also, thought I read at deadline Flyers more interested in Chabot then Chychryn.

I feel like if Chychrun is in the deal, Ottawa is using #7 for a defenseman.

Wasn’t Laughton discussed a year back as going to Ottawa? I’d be fine if he was part of it. I’d much rather that than give up on a ton of young players like brink Foerster frost bee and the like. |

I don’t think we disagree that much. If by saying the Flyers need to draft no-brainers by tanking to get top 5 picks then I’m all aboard. To get superstars you have to be drafting at the top. Flyers got lucky once with a lottery win and blew it. It wasn’t part of the strategy to get that pick.
All of the teams who’ve tanked and then gone on to win the cup(s) have missed on players. But they all sucked for many years and were able to hit on enough of their other top picks. |

There’s been so many names mentioned….”IF” a trade does happen…there’s a lot of different pieces that could be in the deal…could be huge exchange of assets…could be one for one. |

Chychryn is a year younger then Chabot, who will not to be re signed. Pretty certain Chychryn's extension will be longer theb Chabot who has 4 years left. |

Well you nailed it, tanking one year is not the answer. You have to build the cupboard and the Flyers have ALWAYS been unwilling to do that. If the Flyers wanted to stay away from the "tank" then they have to be better drafters, especially later rounds where others always seem to find good ones.
Flyers are pretty good at drafting "safe" good NHL players, those teams don't win cups.
