Turcotte playing on line 1 with Kopitar and Kempe - LAHawk
Guess I read that Turcotte looks pretty good this yr, tuned into parts of 2 games and he looked more poised than ever. He's 23, went 5th overall, less than 50 NHL games. .... Rooting for this kid. Skating with 2 fine NHLers is a sweet spot.
About looking like the Red Army. Sure a lotta of it was to the perimeter but the circling and cycles along the wall gave them big possession in the Ozone and will eventually lead to blown coverages, spent legs and grade a's that will go. Jones was the beneficiary of feeds at the circle from the corner for down to one knee rips. Those are gonna go. ...... Even Bedard and his line were proficient cycling.
Of course that was against SJ......

I thought that the game started already, because the Hawks were not notified. |

Clean out, speed thru the neutral zone leads to drawing a PP. |

Hockey Gods have strange ways of meting out justice. Hawks deserved the 2 pts in SJ and an L in LA.... All comes out in the wash.
Big win as they were dangerous just often enough to get 2 pts out of what was a piss poor effort on a Saturday afternoon. |

Very poor effort the first two periods, obviously much better effort in the third. Actually, a very bs effort those first two periods, if it was a night game out west, I would have gone to sleep after the first. |

Caught the WHL Edmonton at Seattle game live last night, really good game, Edmonton won 5-4 in a shootout. Some game notes:
Blake Fiddler, RD, 6-4, 209 (Wiz #18 2025 draft) is the son of Vernon Fiddler, long time forward for Nashville, Phoenix, Dallas, etc. Blake Fiddler was the top pick in the CHL import draft, taken by Edmonton. His size is noticeable and he looks slightly top-heavy (and was toppled once during the game in the d-zone), but has some room to add some lower-body bulk. He skates well, and has very good puck handling; roves east-west easily in all zones. Has some NHL sense already; for example, he has high energy shifts and does not extend them.
Learning to be physical in the defensive zone, moves smoothly, looks to exit by passing rather than carrying. Played on the left side a little and didn't look uncomfortable. He and his d partner got lost twice on a nice back-door play Seattle was running; one of these was a goal against. Also made a couple of exit passes through the middle that were intercepted and resulted in Seattle chances. No major flaws - all the errors seem like correctable things.
Able to carry easily in the neutral zone but always looking for the pass. On offense he pinched in a few times and took the puck behind the net with some mixed results. Created chances but also lost the puck a couple of times and was then behind the play. Has a good low shot but can also lift the puck as well. A quick lateral move, receiving the puck and a hard quick shot resulted in his goal tying the game at 4-4 in the third. Had a nice keep-in and pass to create a scoring chance.
Talent is definitely there for the 2025 first round, if he lasts to the Toronto pick will be fair value or maybe a bargain.
---------------
Old favorite Gracyn Sawchyn returned to Seattle and had one assist for Edmonton; he has continued to get better, and FLA might have a nice middle 6 player in a couple of years. His younger brother Lukas Sawchyn is also on the Edmonton team, and is draft eligible for 2025. He is smaller and thicker than his older brother, but plays a similar game. Made an excellent reverse pass in front across the goal mouth to set up a teammate for a score. Has 1-8-9 points in 14 games and could be considered in the mid to late rounds.
For Seattle, Brayden Cootes (C, 6-0, 183, 2025 eligible, 5-10-15 pts in 16 games) had a goal and 6 shots. Cootes was a B prospect in the Central Scouting rankings, so he might be a mid-rounder.
Of note, Edmonton has forward Joe Iginla (2026 eligible), another son of Jarome Iginla on the roster but he did not play last night. Has 1-1-2 pts in 11 games so far. Like his brother will probably develop over this year and next, and should be interesting to see how he turns out. He is a smaller player right now being 5-10, 165. |
