Is this the worst Team Canada we've ever watched? This is Spengler level terrible. |

You'd think that, looking at the shots, but most were from the outside. This team is bad.
And looky, another penalty. Like c'mon. |

He really didn't. Canada doesn't have a lot of elite shooters. They also didn't get into the dangerous areas - shooting from the outside too much and not giving enough of an effort to get to those areas.
He did well enough in the shootout, but that demonstrated how low-end Canada's shooting skill really is in my opinion.

He stopped 53 of 55 shots against Canada in Ottawa.
Then he stopped 8 of 8 in the shootout.
Latvia had two wins in WJC history coming into tonight.
It’s easily in the top 10 of all goaltending performances in WJC history.
Give the kid the props he deserves. |

So we're clear - I'm happy for the kid, but I sincerely don't think he made many ten bell saves - he wasn't challenged that much. Most of the shots were from the outside or from deep. He was positionally sound and his team took the middle of the ice away and Canada did nothing to get it back. Did you think any of our shootout shooters looked dangerous compared to theirs? I thought they had at least 4 chances that could have been goals (2 were wide) and I didn't actually think any of ours were very good chances at all.

Are you new to the wjc? lol
Half the goals are scored from distance with no traffic in front. These are kids playing not NHLers. |

Not all goals are scored from dangerous areas, but most still are from the top players - and in general our teams have had better shot selection and quality.
I thought last year's team looked pretty poor as well - outside of Celebrini who really stood out, you had a lot of guys who were inconsistent or played outside too much - like I thought Poitras, Minten and Cowan would all be better, but I was sort of disappointed by all of them. Yager seems fast, but his shot is mediocre. Now again, I know they are 18 or 19 years old and are not men yet. But if I look at what I've seen this year or the year prior and draw a comparison to the year they won in 22-23, let's exclude Bedard and still look at Stankhoven, Guenther, Roy, Fantilli and Wright - I don't think we've had players of that calibre on the team for two years.
We'll see, right? In these tournaments there are moments that can galvanize you to start playing with more emphasis on the details - but I watched yesterday's game and really took away that Latvia - despite missing the net on a few golden chances - actually found more holes in the Canadian defense and had better opportunities to the net than Canada did. I also thought that Latvia setup a really good 5 man box in the middle of the ice and Canada did too little to penetrate it.
That said, we won two years ago in the 2022-23 year and Canada opened the tournament losing to the Czechs despite outshooting them something like 40-20 . . and that goalie, as I recall it, really stole the show. I'm not above giving a goalie his props, and the Latvian guy did his job, but Canada could have done a LOT more to make it harder on him.

can we at least all agree on the fact that Cowan should never take a penalty shot the rest of his career? |

LTIR for rest of regular season. Have fun with $12M or so in cap space. Willie wins the Rocket. Leafs win the Cup. Bettman doesn’t look into Leafs using LTIR loophole.
Easy peasy |
