You need skill to win, and most skilled players are not gritty players, but there are exceptions. It's just not the rule. MacKinnon is a gritty player, but they don't come around very often. The 1990's are gone and the league is just not what it used to be, the Pavel Bure flying elbow days by one of the most skilled players in the league are gone.
