That happens in most sports...including the NHL, there are some basement dwelling teams that cant attract superstars or keep homegrown ones and therefore have issues attracting fans.
The 3pt game in the NHL is really a mirage to make teams and their fans think they may still have a shot at the playoffs or keeping pace with playoff teams.
What you described, happens in almost all the north american team sport leagues.
Not sure about the NFL, cause I dont watch that poop. - Fakepartofme
The tie-game, or 1 point awarded to both teams, was always there. The 3-point game that everyone female doges and moans about is holding that system in place, not a mirage to fool people.
There are preferred destinations which you simply can't control - whether it's taxation, climate - or even family related. But you can't compare hockey and baseball at all - at least not with a straight face. Teams like Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa - all with less than stellar climates or reputation for it - are attracting free agents, keeping free agents long-term and competing in these conversations.
Prior to the Salary Cap being in place - if any of those teams were building up a young guy, he was GONE when he got a UFA chance. We were one of the teams taking from the poor and keeping for the rich. It benefited us - not where we could DO anything with it, but still - and I've always maintained that it hurts the league as a whole.

I dont think the leafs really benefitted from it, they mostly got aging vets...rarely did they get the young stud player pre cap days. Also pre cap, didnt the players have to wait until they were 31 before becoming FA's? Now they become FA's at a younger age. |

From the internet
"Revenue Sharing between MLB teams is defined in Article XXIV of the 2022 Collective Bargaining Agreement. It’s a highly complicated set of legal definitions to arrive at the definition of certain revenue-related terms,, but in essence it goes like this:
First, teams take 48% of their “Local Revenue” and put it into a pot that’s split equally amongst the 30 teams. This figure lately has been north of 100M per team, which is far more than the payroll of many of the revenue receiving teams, hence the controversy.
There’s a complicated set of Market Scores, Tiers, and a tie-in to CBT luxury tax penalties as well."
Apparently its further explained here....scroll past the crap at the beginning

I've read this stuff before, but then I read Rob whats-his-face . . . the spineless wussy in charge who let Houston keep their cheating win - when he said that the model doesn't really work like that and the way money is allocated is up to the league's discretion and blah, blah, blah . . but that article basically said that the distribution of that pooled wealth doesn't really go to the teams like we think it does.
But . . . whatever. Ultimately the solutions are sort of the same - you need a floor, but you also need a ceiling. |

I think Free Agency probably turned the Leafs from another laughing stock team in the later 90s / early 2000s. Like the guys they signed were aging, but many had decent years - certainly better than we were getting from the losers who had been loafing around. But like Thomas was 35, but was very good his first year, quite good in his second and not a liability in his third (so not great, but you know . . .). We all hated Hoglund, but his first year was good; Korolev was tolerable; Gary Roberts we all loved as did we love Mogilny.
And realistically the franchise's fortunes changed when they signed Joseph and Belfour.

I'd like to see a small adjustment - a small amount that teams can pay above the cap, with a luxury tax.
Sorry, but it franking galls me that I'm paying out the wazoo for tickets, while small market teams charge peanuts - and a portion of my money gets funneled to them, with no benefit to me.
I'm all for competitive balance - I'd never want to see something like European football - but there should be a reward for having an engaged fan base. |

Landeskog taking contact in practice. He’ll probably be ready for game 1. He’s 2 years removed but I’m sure he’ll still have a major impact. - bryant
Not sure what to expect, but even the emotional lift should be big for them. Even if he's a 4th liner it's a boost. |

The problem is that you do theoretically see it - they just don't know how to use it properly. The Leafs should have better facilities, coaching, scouting, training, doctors, development, analytics departments and management staff to help our prospects reach their ceiling. They should have more and better foreign scouting departments to not only unearth talent but also recruit it away from other leagues. If you have the financial clout at your disposal, then you should be using it.
The Dodgers and Yankees not only manage to pull free agents to them but they also scout and recruit foreign talent better than most because they are using their money to their advantage all over the place.
The Leafs have SAID they are going to do this but given that we haven't seen the results, it's pretty clear that they are either lying or doing an absolutely lousy job of it.
I'm not saying there's a whole lot of talent out there just waiting to be found, but if there's a Kucherov, a Point, a Lidstrom, a Datsyuk or Zetterberg - I want the Leafs to be the ones who know about them first. |

The Leafs have traded every 1st round pick from 2017 until 2027, have they not?
Never mind the late round gems, this team can't even put it's "advantage" of scouting to the draft table early enough to give them the best possible odds of drafting impact players.
The Leafs can spend all the money they want on all the satellite employees they want but until they have a legitimate hockey President and GM, the critical decisions will continue to be mistakes. |

That’s advice my employee should’ve took before going to HR. Not only is he a grown man who plays Pokémon, now he’s a jobless grown man who plays Pokémon.
Life is really good sometimes. Not for him tho. |

As coach, yes, as GM, no.
Jim Nill was the hidden gem the Leafs missed the boat on.
Instead of hiring the guy who helped build a dynasty, they hired one of the players from that dynasty who has no (frank)ing idea how to build the team he played on. |
