This is a note on the NIL post from the other day. Blackhawks prospect entered portal, have to see how it turns out and if it starts a trend: First transfer portal prospect (Chicago). This lets teams with NIL$ know there’s a possible pickup. March Madness already saying “death of Cinderella teams”. We’ll see if this kid gets a payday out of it: https://www.prohockeyrumo...ters-transfer-portal.html

This is something we talked a lot about. Waiting to hear if $ are involved. After that, 1 year to free agency. This NIL stuff is a real disrupter and the NHL needs to get to the table with the NCAA

Iteresting info about the current/upcoming nhl media contracts. However, to an expat these contract seem absurd, and I cant believe fans are paying the freight for these contracts.

Free or extremely cheap IPTV has replaced traditional media in my current European getaway. I always have 10+ feeds available for Wings games, inclusive of the feeds used by off-ice officials.

Some curious questions, if anyone cares to answer:
1. How much are Hockeybuzz readers paying monthly for sports and media steaming?
2. Why not use free or cheap IPTV for all-inclusive sports and media streaming? Are the feeds blocked? If you are curious, the feeds are commonly aggregated at onhockey (dot) tv. This may let you know if IPTV streams are available in your locale.

I don't think this is a good move for Trey from a development standpoint. It may have been an emotional decision, or he may have decided that he's not sure if he wants to be a Wing. He has nothing left to prove at the NCAA level. He was Big Ten Freshman of the year, was Big Ten goalie of the year, was Big Ten tournament MVP as a freshman, a WJC goal, and was a finalist for the Mike Richter award, all as an 18 year old.

He followed that up with another WJC gold, Big Ten goalie of the year, first team all Big Ten, and he's a finalist again for the Richter award. IMO, he needs to move on to a higher level and learn to prepare for an 80 game season, and learn to prepare for games he's not going to play in. He's played in every single MSU game over the past two years and it's a different mindset to prepare when you're going to be opening the door. It's a different mindset to prepare for long road trips, versus just playing Fridays and Saturdays.

Going into this year, he lost his best two defensemen and it showed. This year, he's losing his top 4 defensemen and it's not going to get better next year, so I don't think this was a good move for him. Good for MSU, but not for his development.

Detroit overcooks all its goalie prospects and collects mediocre vets like infinity stones. They still have Mrazek and Talbot still signed through next year. Cossa will be 23 this year, has two excellent AHL seasons under his belt, and will still probably be stuck in Grand Rapids when the next season begins.

If Augustine signs his ELC there’s no guarantee he’d even be the starter in GR and probably won’t be in the NHL for at least a couple more years. He’d be making something like $80k per year to slog through the minors until that happens, which is chump change compared to even a single season of league minimum NHL pay. Going back to the NCAA honestly seems like a pretty appealing alternative even without considering what NIL money might be available.

As for his development … I mean, I agree that a season in GR, even as a backup, would probably put him a little further ahead by this time next year than another season at MSU. But the cynic in me says that no matter what he does, Detroit’s probably not going to give him a real shot at an NHL gig for another 2-3 years regardless. So do you want to be stuck in the AHL for 2-3 years? Or play another year at MSU, then get 1-2 years of minor league seasoning before making the NHL? Either way he’s going to be burning at least one season somewhere where he has nothing left to prove. I don’t think he’s going to need more than 1-2 seasons of AHL play to be ready to make the jump, so if he’s not getting the NHL reigns until 2027 or 2028 in any circumstance I’m not convinced that it truly matters where he spends next year.
