College free agents can hit UFA status after 4 years. He’ll now have 3. The biggest risk would be either having a team in mind that may have communicated (yes tampering but happens) or at least just testing the UFA waters. If an EDM or FLA or contender wants him to have a backup role with opportunity they can present an opportunity Detroit may not be able to. If he were in pro he could be signed to an ELC. Players, more and more, want to explore options. Developmentally, this doesn’t seem to be a step forward and if $ are involved another team may already be in the mix

We obviously won’t know the answer for at least another year. I don’t think that holds the sway it once did. He’s now turned down the ELC offer twice. Hoping he just really wants to win NCAA championship
