Don't despair. This was the coming out party for both Montreal and Ottawa. The Atlantic division is by far the stronger of the two Eastern Conferences. They've been rolling up points on their weak division opponents, but now a team like Montreal that had to fight to just get in gets to play teams that would fare much worse if they were in the other division. Toronto had to do what the Sens did for 9 years with little success. It was always Boston, Tampa and Florida going to the finals almost every year. Outside of Washington's Cup win, the Metro has done squat. Just look at it as a learning year and know that Ottawa will be better next year for what they've had to endure. Toronto had to earn 1st place for the first time in decades, by beating the perennial Cup finalists in the regular season. Time has caught up to the Bruins and the two Florida teams will soon start dropping in the standings like Boston. All of their draft capital has been used the last 5 years to stay competitive. Their current players can't sustain their peak efficiencies much longer. Ottawa and Montreal will be where Toronto is, in 3 years, near the top. Have patience.
