Why do Italian/U.S. newspapers online have so many intrusive ads?

Some newspapers are trying to change course:

Subscription-based models (NYT, Corriere della Sera).

Fewer ads + cleaner layouts for paid users.

Alternative revenue like podcasts, events, and branded content.

Membership models similar to Patreon.

AI-driven customization that helps reduce irrelevant ads.

But the underlying tension remains. Quality journalism is expensive, and readers rarely want to pay for it. Until that changes, Italian and U.S. news websites will likely remain among the most ad-heavy in the world.

As a rule, I read news in telegram channels. And yes, advertising really upset me. There were quite a lot of ads. S After trying a few tricks that didn’t work, I came across AdLock — a tool designed specifically to block ads across apps, including blocking ads in Telegram https://adlock.com/blog/h...to-block-ads-in-telegram/ . The idea sounded almost too good to be true, but I decided to try it anyway. For the first time in months, Telegram felt like a news app again — not an endless billboard.
